The single biggest reason wedding planning feels overwhelming isn’t the number of tasks — it’s not knowing what to do when. Here’s a clear month-by-month timeline you can follow from the moment you’re engaged to the morning of the big day.

12+ months before

This is the foundation. Get these right and everything else falls into place.

• Agree a rough budget and who’s contributing.
• Draft a guest-list estimate — it drives venue size and cost.
• Pick a season or a shortlist of dates.
• Tour and book your ceremony and reception venues.
• Book the highest-demand vendors early: photographer, caterer, band or DJ.

9–11 months before

• Lock the date once the venue is confirmed.
• Send save-the-dates so guests can plan travel.
• Start shopping for wedding attire — alterations take time.
• Book officiant, florist, and any rentals.

6–8 months before

• Finalise the guest list and gather addresses.
• Plan the honeymoon and check passport validity.
• Arrange transport and any room blocks for out-of-town guests.
• Order invitations and decide how you’ll collect RSVPs.

4–5 months before

• Confirm the menu and schedule a tasting.
• Choose the cake and finalise flowers.
• Buy wedding bands.
• Draft the day-of timeline and share it with key vendors.

2–3 months before

• Send invitations (aim for RSVPs six to eight weeks before).
• Finalise the ceremony order and any readings or vows.
• Confirm numbers with the caterer as replies arrive.
• Start a seating plan.

The final month

• Chase any missing RSVPs and lock the final headcount.
• Give the venue and caterer final numbers and dietary needs.
• Confirm timings with every vendor in writing.
• Assign day-of roles to your crew so you’re not fielding questions.

The week of, and the day itself

• Pack an emergency kit and lay out everything the night before.
• Share the minute-by-minute schedule with your wedding party.
